Kitchen Appliances, and the Upkeep That Decides How Long They Last

Ten guides on the machines a kitchen actually runs on: the coffee makers, the grinders, the presses and the pans. What they do, how to keep them working, and where a buying decision is genuinely worth making.

Research-led guide Coffee

The machine, and the descale nobody does

Coffee equipment fails in one of two ways: scale, or a part that was never meant to stay in place for a year. All three of these name the machine and the part, because generic descaling advice is where most of the damage starts.

Baking

Getting the cake out of the pan

One guide for that moment. The general case is mostly preparation and timing; angel food cake, baked in a bare tube pan, gets its own section because it needs a different move.

Before you buy

What the appliance actually does

Two of the appliances in this section get bought by people who do not yet need one, and two get skipped by people who would use one weekly. Read the explainer before the buying guide.

Kitchen appliance buying guides

These four are research-led: every pick is compared on published criteria using manufacturer specifications, independent certifications and verified owner-review patterns, and each guide shows its method in a How We Chose section. None of them claims hands-on testing.

The ridged plate of a panini press after use

Best Panini Press

Plate material, heat recovery and the hinge that decides how thick a sandwich can be.

Inside a wet grinder showing three conical grinding stones

Best Wet Grinders

Stone configuration, drum capacity and the models worth their price.

The blade grid of a manual potato cutter

Best Potato Slicer

Which cuts each blade set can make, and which ones are a safety problem.

Keeping it working

The maintenance half of every appliance decision

Most kitchen appliances do not wear out. They get dirty in a place their owner never looks, and then get replaced. These are the six that account for nearly all of it.

The full kitchen sequence, written as one job rather than a list of tasks.Top to bottom, dry to wet, floor last, so nothing gets cleaned twice.

Quick answers

Kitchen questions we get most

Do I need a water filter in a Keurig 2.0?

Not to make it work, but the filter is doing something and skipping it has consequences for scale and for taste. Keurig 2.0 Without a Water Filter covers what the filter actually removes, what happens over time without it, and the descaling interval that replaces it.

What is a wet grinder, and do I need one?

A wet grinder is a stone grinder for batters, and it is not interchangeable with a blender or a food processor. What Is a Wet Grinder, the opening section of our wet grinder guide, explains what the stones do that blades cannot, and who genuinely needs one.

Why does my cake keep breaking when I turn it out?

Usually the pan preparation, sometimes the timing of the turn-out, and occasionally the pan itself. How to Remove Cake from Pan Without Breaking covers the general case, and its angel food section covers the bare tube pan, which is its own problem.

How often should kitchen appliances actually be cleaned?

It varies per appliance and per manufacturer, which is why the guides here name the machine rather than giving one rule. As a rough shape: a dishwasher filter every one to two weeks, a range hood filter monthly, a coffee maker descaled on the interval in its own manual. The specific numbers in each guide come from the manufacturer documentation, cited in the guide.

Are your appliance picks tested?

No, and we say so. The four buying guides in this section are research-led: every pick is compared on published criteria using manufacturer specifications, independent certifications where they exist and verified owner-review patterns, and each guide has a How We Chose section that shows the method. None of these picks was tested hands-on, and How We Test sets out the stricter standard a hands-on product review would have to meet.
